Aim and Objectives

The aim of this course is to provide newly promoted employees who are taking their first steps into management.  This interactive course will assist those attending to make the mind set shift necessary to ensure they make impact at this new level.  It will look in detail at the importance of the first 90 days in this role.  Finally, it will bring those attending through the specific skills needed to succeed in their new role.

Behaviour Questionnaire

  • A brief background to behaviour analysis

Motivating for Outstanding Performance

  • Herzberg’s motivators/hygiene factors – new evidence supporting Herzberg’s work
  • 30 practical ways to motivate your teams
  • Newer thinking on motivation: Buckingham & Coffman
  • Modern research: the key things that most motivate staff – the latest university studies

Case Study: The case of a manager who is not very motivated – how to remotivate this person

Session 3
Setting Team Objectives

  • Management by objectives
  • How and how often to agree objectives with your people
  • How to write SMART objectives
  • Setting stretch goals

Practical Exercise: Team convert all objectives to meet SMART criteria

Session 4
The Development Stages of Your Team to Add Value to Performance

  • Managers are taken through team development cycle to look at how team develop and mature
  • Managers review to see if their team is in the forming, storming, norming and performing stage
  • Each manager will assess the maturity level of the members of their own team and consider what style they have been using and modify where necessary

Practical Exercise: Managers will use a questionnaire to assess the development stage of their team

Case Simulation: Stepping up to Leadership

  • Case Study on how you would align your stakeholders to create execution
  • Discussion and group feedback
  • Handling situations in the future

Putting it all into Practice
